A primeira, o islão, absorveu e desenvolveu inicialmente o conhecimento e os métodos dos povos conquistados. Durante o período de que nos estamos a ocupar (1000 a 1500 em números redondos), o domínio muçulmano ia desde a extremidade ocidental do Mediterrâneo até as Índias. Antes disso, desde cerca de 750 até 1100, a ciência e a tecnologia islâmicas superavam largamente as da Europa, que precisava de recuperar a sua herança, o que fez, em certa medida, através dos contactos com muçulmanos em áreas fronteiriças, como, por exemplo, a Espanha. O islão era o professor da Europa.
Mas, a partir de certo momento, as coisas enveredaram por um caminho errado. A ciência islâmica, denunciada como herética por fanáticos religiosos, submeteu=se à pressão teológica exercida em nome do conformismo espiritual. (Para pensadores e pesquisadores, isso podia ser uma questão de vida ou de morte.) Para o islão militante, a verdade já tinha sido revelada. O que levava de volta a verdade era útil e permissível, tudo o resto era erro e fraude“. O historiador Ibn Khaldiín, conservador em matérias religiosas, mostrava-se consternado com a hostilidade muçulmana ao conhecimento:

In another experiment in the series, participants were told that they would shortly have a get-acquainted conversation with another person and were asked to set up two chairs while the experimenter left to retrieve that person. Participants primed by money chose to stay much farther apart than their nonprimed peers (118 vs. 80 centimeters). Money-primed undergraduates also showed a greater preference for being alone.
